“I’m where I need to be. I’m where I belong.”
Newly signed Detroit Lions cornerback Amik Robertson spoke to the media virtually on March 18. The introductory press conference was recently released by the Detroit Lions on YouTube (watch here), and it's well worth your time.
Here is what I took away from Amik's first official appearance as a Detroit Lion.
Amik Wants to Play for Dan Campbell
“You want to play for a man like that.”
There's a reason Dan Campbell earned an A+ from players in the anonymous NFLPA survey - players want to play for him, and Amik Robertson is one of them. Amik is yet another player that mentioned he's ready to run through a wall and that he's excited to play for Dan.
Dan Campbell's likability and leadership skills are clearly becoming a competitive advantage for the Detroit Lions.
A Man of the People
“I just want to show you guys that this was not (a) mistake and y’all got your guy. I’m a guy that’s gonna to give y’all everything I got.”
Amik is in-touch with how Raiders fans perceived him and his abilities, and he's ready to prove to Detroit Lions fans that he's here to make a difference. Amik discussed how he overcame a rough rookie season to carve out a significant role with the Raiders and improve along the way.
He's an Outside Corner, But He'll Play Anywhere
“I’m a football player man, wherever you put me on the field, you know, I’ll adjust, I’ll do what I can to fit in, to put myself in the position to make plays and help the team be successful.”
Robertson was honest that he does have a role in mind in regards to where he'll play on the Lions defense, but made it clear that he just wants to play. “I’ll let the cards fall where they fall…I want to earn it.”
He Hunts Balls
As a former receiver, Amik wants the wall. “This game is all about the ball; it’s all about turnovers.” Amik said he will punch and claw at the ball, and focuses on putting himself in position to get the ball. He also expects to increase his interception total, saying, “I want 4-5 a year.”
