4 Fast Takeaways from Marcus Davenport’s Introductory Press Conference

On Thursday, OLB Marcus Davenport, who recently signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions, talked to the media (watch here). The 27-year-old, who is going into his 7th year in the NFL, is expected to add depth to the Lions defensive line while contributing to the team's pass rush.

Here are 5 fast takeaways from his press conference.

  1. He feels comfortable with the Lions.

Marcus is not only comfortable in front of the media, but behind the scenes with the Lions staff. Marcus mentioned being excited to be around people he knows, singling out Aaron Glenn and Dan Campbell, who were a part of the New Orleans Saints coaching staff. Marcus spent five years in New Orleans before signing with Minnesota in 2023.

2. Marcus wants to play for Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn.

It became very clear that a key reason Marcus signed with Detroit was because of his respect for Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn.

“Him (AG) and Dan, like, are two people I’ve watched and I want to play for, I don’t think there’s many coaches in the league that people actually want to play for.” - Marcus Davenport

3. He isn't relying on past experience or results.

“I was told by somebody recently, that we got a lot of young guys that could learn from me. My first thought was, shoot, we got a lot of guys I could learn from.”

Marcus shrugged off several comments related to his nine-sack season in 2021. He sounds excited and open to learning from others while growing as a player.

4. Tough times motivate him.

Marcus won't forget his down years. “2022 I needed. 2023 I needed…those are steps I had to take…I’m trying to use that to catapult me into greatness.”

Welcome to Detroit, Marcus!
