Many of my favorite podcasts, TV shows, stand-up comedians—I didn’t find until practically everyone else had. That’s not the case with the Lions Basement Banter Podcast. Hosted by die-hard Lions fans Zac and Brendan in…you guessed it, a basement, the brothers offer their unique takes on the team, recap and preview games, answer questions submitted by fans, and more. Follow the show here on X.
Zac and Brendan officially launched the show after the end of the 2023 NFL season and prior to the 2024 NFL Draft. I believe I was tagged in a tweet that made me aware of the new show, and I instantly became a fan.
The show has gained over 1,100 followers on X and is available to stream on all major podcasting platforms. Zac participated in this week’s Podcast of the Month interview to talk about how he became a Lions fan, what he loves most about the Detroit Lions, why they started the show, and more.
Question: How did you become a Lions fan?
Zac: I was born into being a Lions fan. Our Dad was a HUGE Bears fan in High School and then when Sweetness retired, he changed to a more local team. So he was a Lions fan before I was born. I grew up watching Barry Sanders in my younger years. Hard to ever move from such a DEEP-ROOTED love for the Honolulu Blue!
Q: What do you love most about this team?
Zac: What I love about the team from 36 years of watching: I love the FANS. No matter HOW bad this team has been in the past, we all still LOVE them. We still come back year-after-year with the SAME hope as if the 'bad years' never even happened! What I love about the current team is the FIGHT, the GRIT. They literally don't care about the past JUST LIKE the fans I love so much. It doesn't define them. THEY define themselves. I LOVE that about them!
Q: Why did you start the Lions Basement Banter Podcast?
Zac: We started Lions Basement Banter on a whim. We were sitting at the dinner table one night (Brendan rents our downstairs apartment) with the kids and my wife and Brendan. We were talking football and a seed of an idea popped in my head.
I couldn't stop thinking 'we literally ALWAYS talk about the Lions. It doesn't matter if it's November and mid-season, or if it's by the pool in June. We never stop.’ So, I kept it to myself for a while. Then the Watch Party happened at Ford Field during the NFC Championship game and I knew, we really need to put our takes, our thoughts, our PASSION to the airwaves. It's just slowly grown from there.
Q: What do you try to offer that's different than others?
Zac: We try to offer a couple of things that are different than (most) others: first, we keep it real. We are literally sitting on folding chairs at a folding table in a basement. We are working to upgrade as we grow, but, we are REAL. We work HARD to keep things REAL. We do quirky things and will continue to do things more and more to keep it interesting. We just added Scary Sanders to the show and he MAY become a mainstay. But we stay real.
Everything we do, graphics, ticker, merch, etc is ALL done by US. We don't have ANYONE working behind the scenes. It's JUST US all the time. The other thing I think we have that others don't is we are FOR the fans AND BY the fans. Q: What would you like to say to #onepride?
Zac: To One Pride Nation, a couple things I'd like to say:
Keep the faith, the team is young but the core and the staff is built RIGHT. There WILL be ebbs and flows but, as MCDC says, "We are built for this!"
Continue to stay involved in our show, we LOVE the fans because we ARE the fans! Let us know what you WANT to see. We don't want you to watch what we want you to watch. We want to put out what you WILL watch! We need YOU to keep this going!
